Uni

Whilst studying Architectural Technology and the Environment (BA Hons) at Plymouth University, I was enabled to build my technical understanding of construction & develop my passion for Sustainability.

Early Work

In the last few years I’ve predominantly worked as an Architectural Technologist.  However earlier in life, a relatively short attention span has let me experience various jobs. From instructing snowboarding abroad, working as a sous chef in a busy kitchen, and even a bit of graphic design. But I fondly remember the hands on building work that I did during the Uni holidays.

Travel

After a few years in an architects practice, I became frustrated with the corporate nature of the job. So I brought a beat up old van & went to “find myself” by traveling around Europe. This mainly involved snowboarding, however to my pleasant surprise it also involved WOOOFing, visiting many small holdings & learning a bit about permaculture.

These different places had many varied & interesting structure, including cabins in the woods, tipis, yurts, beautiful round houses, as well as your tradition houses.

Work

Upon returning to the UK, I again return to an architecture practise, but inspired by what I had seen in Europe. I decided to read into different form of natural building, learn how people can better live with Gaia and visited various straw bale houses in my spare time.

Straw Works

Whilst looking into natural building a found a brilliant book on straw bale building by Barbara Jones of ‘Straw Works’. Soon after I attended one of their courses. This initially course had me hooked, I believe the term used is “bale frenzy”.

See Straw Works website for more information & course dates www.strawworks.co.uk

sustainability

Stainability has been a core focus in my life. Though thus far this has merely involved reading book, & talking a good talk!

After becoming frustrated with what appears to be a lack of progress globally in sustainable development, I decided to stop sitting at my desk & to actually go help “Build the change I wished to see in the world”.

Internship

During my desk based research I managed to find a straw bale internship with ‘Jeffery the natural builder’ in Wales, this seemed to perfectly fit my growing desire to learn more about natural building.  Jeffery’s work can be found at

Starting Blog

Not one to be sat twiddling my thumbs, I decided it could be a good idea to start a blog documenting the progression from straw build novice to natural builder & beyond. Hey one day I might even be set up on my own…. But until then I hope you can enjoy & hopefully learn from my experience.
